The A-level physics students have installed a TC-1 seismometer in a classroom at the Cullingworth school to monitor such events around the world.

They have joined the IRIS’s Seismographs in Schools Programme which uses seismic instruments and real-time seismic data to monitor global events, which they can then use in class and with students in the lower years.

Parkside physics teacher Caroline Handley applied for the TC-1 seismometer from The Ogden Trust, a charitable trust promotes the teaching and learning of physics, particularly at post-16.

Caroline said: “Parkside School science department hopes the seismometer will engage students in applying their knowledge to the real world, and raise their awareness of opportunities in higher education and careers that they may not have previously considered.”
